Amazon.co.uk Review Out of the Blue is a romantic comedy that explores the pressures of marriage in the 21st century. Faith and Peter are celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. On the surface they appear to have it all: a secure, happy relationship; two intelligent teenage children and successful, glamorous careers--he as a publisher and she as a TV weather girl. But a casual comment by her best friend Lily makes Faith wonder if her world is as perfect as it seems. She begins to wonder whether Peter's new, smart look really is because he's looking for a new job and wants to impress prospective employers. As Faith begins to doubt her husband's fidelity, she endeavours to "put all her fears to rest"--checking trouser pockets, scanning mobile phone bills for unfamiliar numbers, examining credit card statements for evidence of secret dates, even hiring a private detective. What ensues is a tale of deceit and self-deceit as she strives to find happiness once again. Isabel Wolff's third novel is a modern romance with an interesting mix of characters--Faith's perceptive daughter Katie, always at hand to give Freudian insights into her mother's relationships; Lily, an eccentric editor for a top woman's magazine who wants to take Faith away from her "boring little trips to Ikea" and "boring little house"; and the charming but duplicitous Jos, Faith's new love interest, who all add a little spice to the predictable story line. But what the plot lacks in originality, Wolff makes up with writing that is energetic, upbeat and full of humour, making Out of the Blue a novel that should be on the reading list of every thirtysomething woman. --Amy Gallagher

Lovely Book About Marriage and Relationships June 13, 2003 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great Book! Isabell Wolff has done it again. I love every one of her other books and this one is no expection. Fantastic story about love, marriage, relationships, infedelity and family. Not as "laugh out loud" funny as her other books, but I enjoyed this one more. This book had more heart than humour, but it was not lacking in anyway! Well done, Ms Wolff!
Page turning holiday read May 28, 2002 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book stays on the same classic chick-lit territory that Minty Malone and Tiffany Trot inhabited. Faith is a woman with marital problems from which she is distracted by the implausibly handsome and charming Jos. There are a couple of minor sideplots involving her best friend, Lily, and the activities of her precocious children. It's a shame these weren't developed further, as the supporting characters are interesting enough to merit stories of their own. However, this is a minor quibble in a book that certainly absorbed me totally for 24 hours!
It's very funny and hard to put down May 27, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The writer has skillfully taken a storyline which is not uncommon, i.e. divorce, betrayal, friendship, but tells it as a hilarious but moving story with an unpredictable ending and twists throughout. It's a bit like a 'Bridget Jones Diary' but better.
surprised! August 20, 2001 2 out of 14 found this review helpful
Well, first off, I have to say that I really enjoy reading Isabel Wolff's books and look forward to many more to come. I loved Minty and Tiffany. I was so excited to get this book, I couldn't wait for it's release in the states, so I ordered from UK. I was a bit disappointed though. This definately was not as good as the others. I felt that Faith was not as strong as Minty or Tiffany, she lacked self-esteeem and it bothered me. I think, as a whole, I didn't really like any of the characters, especially, Faith's friend. She annoyed me, with her dog named Jennifer Aniston. This story lacked the humorous content the others had, either that or I was just so excited for it's release, that I disappointed myself. I hope to see another book soon though!
A Fabulous Summer Read!!! July 18, 2001 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I loved this book and devoured it in a day and a half - despite being at work at the time! No mean feat I can tell you (hope my boss isn't reading this). Basically the book is a touching, and very funny portrait of a marriage which, though basically happy, has gone a little tired at the edges, combined with a real page-turning mystery involving Faith's best friend Lily, a glamorous magazine editor. What WAS Lily up to? (I guessed completely wrong) and what WAS Joss's secret? (ditto ditto). I thought Minty Malone was very funny and so is this: in particular, the stuff about Graham the dog and Faith's teenage daughter Katie, an amateur (but brilliant) psychiatrist - was hysterical. Lily is a wonderfully witty character - Faith putty in her hands, until she starts to wise up. Isabelle Wolff's plots are always unpredictable and I loved the clever twist at the end of this one. As with Minty I closed the last page with a huge soppy grin on my face and a sense of harmony restored. I can't wait to read the next novel by this insightful and very funny author.
