Really really good July 30, 2008 Fantastic book. Don't be misled into thinking it is all about McAuslan as there are plenty of other characters to warm the cockles of your heart. My advice is is to find a nice quiet corner next to the fire on a cold night, pull the curtains, pour yourself a large malt and immerse yourself. Heaven.
Hilarious! October 23, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
What can I say? This book had me laughing out loud constantly at the incredible stories about private McAuslan in the first years after World War II. Some of it may be exaggerated but most of it sounds true enough (probably is, I've been in the army too), which makes it all the more fun. I've read all of the Flashman-novels as well and, though it's set in an entirely different period and with a very different main character, McAuslan is as funny. This book is a guaranteed cure for any kind of blues!
Fabulous. April 13, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cannot say more than other reviewers, but I od recommend these books. Extremely well written, highly readable, and hilarious. They bear re-reading, much to my surprise, to a higher degree than the Flashman series - which remains an astonishing body of work, but has grown less engaging.
Fraser is wonderful at writing the accents, and capturing the expressions of the soldiers. As a Glaswegian myself I can wholheartedly approve his use of terms such as "See me", "How no" and "Aw-haw-hey"!
Thoroughly recommended.
The Very Best from GMF. January 7, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have read all of Mr. Fraser's books fiction and non-fiction. While counting myself among the legion of Flashman fans, I must rate the McAuslan tales above all else that GMF has produced. They are fictionalized accounts of the author's experience in the post-'39-'45 War army. There is here a sense of pathos stemming from both the eternal themes of military life and the depiction of a now long-vanished world but one still surviving, just, in the memories of a fading generation.
Best kept secret June 11, 2005 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't tell anyone about this book. Let them wait for the film or TV series and then when everyone in the office mimics The Dirtiest Soldier In The World, casually announce that you read the book years ago. Then they will finally understand why you used to sit & chuckle to yourself for no apparent reason. If you found a seam of gold in your local woods, would you tell everyone about it ? Of course you wouldn't. Well the same goes for this book. Keep shtum.
