A great book for novice and expert cook June 4, 2008 I love this book as it serves as a good reference point for various food items as well.
One of the reasons to love this book is also because the recipes ensure that you do preparation in the most efficient manner.
The sort of recipes that put people off vegetables... February 16, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have been a vegetarian for nearly 15 years now and have accumulated quite a large collection of recipe books in that time. Sadly, Graimes's Complete Vegetarian is one of those I used a number of times and finally put away on the bottom of my pile due to being disappointed time and time again by the boring and bland meal suggestions that this book offers. If you or your kids hate vegetables, this book will certainly not convert you; I absolutely love simple vegetable dishes using carrots, parsnips and potatoes, and when cooked the right way these "simple" vegetables are the most wonderful dishes on the planet. However, out of the 30 or so recipes I have tried from this book, the majority have been tasteless and taste exactly the way vegetables shouldn't. No wonder children notoriously hate their veggies if this is what they are forced to eat. After my various attempts at soups, main courses and desserts, I have finally decided to give up and returned to Leiths, Rose Elliot and the like. I bought this book on account of its lovely photographs (every recipe has a delicious-looking photo accompanying it)but have since been led to believe that the dishes photographed here must have been made out of cardboard...I can't imagine how else anything that looks so beautiful could taste so bland.
I'm not vegeterian but I love this book October 28, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The beginning of the book goes into great, interesting detail about all types of vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, proteins and fats. It discusses all aspects of the vegetarian larder - what each adds to a balanced diet, how to spot good quality/ripe foods and how to cook them to get the best out of them.
The rest of the book contains over 500 recipes separated into categories including breakfasts, soups, starters, special occasions, side dishes and puddings. The recipes are from all over the world, they are easy to follow and there is plenty of colour photography to get your juices going.
As an avid meat eater I have used this book plenty of times, for vegeterian side dishes for a dinner feast and for variety at breakfast time, with scruptious results and plenty of requests for seconds. As a result, I have now cooked a number of vegetarian dishes for their own sake and do not miss the meat.
I don't think I would give up meat altogether but I am certainly more savvy about what and when to buy vegetables, why its important to eat them and how to cook them. What more would a meat eater need from a vegetarian cookbook?
