Amazon.co.uk Review
In The Sacred Romance authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge inspire readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life", this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover", attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blinds the believer and prevents him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life soon becomes empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls. A follow-up book, The Journey of Desire, was written by John Eldredge after Brent Curtis' tragic death. --Jill Heatherly

5 out of 5 stars Pivotal book in my relationship with God   June 1, 2007
4 out of 4 found this review helpful

You know how there are some books that impact you deeply well, for me this is one of those books. I have never bothered to review a book before but here I am.

I read this book in the midst of a truly dreadful period of my life when the circumstances of it made me feel that I was only hanging onto my faith by a fingernail. I was particularly stuggling with how I felt towards God. I felt betrayed, manipulated, angry, disappointed... you name it, I felt it. I grew up in a christian home but I have never felt so betrayed by God as I did in that time. Now for those of you saying God doesn't betray us and so are ignoring my review, well lucky you if you have never felt the pain of life in that way although maybe lucky is the wrong word. Through this time, and helped in part by this book, I have come through with a new and real belief in God's love for me, I have come to accept that I may never understand the circumstances of my life but I have come to trust in God as the person in this book, the person who pursues me, loves me and who is deeply involved in my story in an intimate and real way. I believed these things before (kind of) in my head but now they are in my heart and that is due in part to this book.

The authors write in a very descriptive way which might put some off (I liked it) but if that is not you then pesevere - it is so worth it. In case you are interested, other books that helped during this time is Philip Yancy's Where is God when it hurts and also his Reaching for the Invisible God

5 out of 5 stars Guys, read this, it's for you too!   February 27, 2006

I put that title after seeing that a lot of the named reviewers on here are female, and the title of the book might mislead some guys about its purpose.

This is one of the most incredible books you are ever likely to read. Great reading, and for what is a deep subject it's a remarkably easy read too. It's sprinkled with honest and helpful anecdotes from the lives of the authors which help illustrate the points and make it personal and human, as well as divine and spiritual. The Sacred Romance encourages you to recapture your heart, your soul, your imagination, your vision. It spurs you on to see yourself as part of something bigger. Deep inside each of us at some point is a yearning to be something, a vision that we are made for something bigger, a dream that we have significance, and that there is something more. However, the burdens and 'arrows' of life oppress and stomp all over these visions and desires, and as a result we settle for less, for 'less wild lovers' for addictions, for drivenness and distractions, but we even find that what we settle for does not satisfy. This book reaches into the deepest part of us and affirms that our hopes and dreams point onwards to the greater reality - the God who loves us, who pursues us. The desire deep within us will never be fulfilled by taking the easy road, or by simple pleasures - sure, we might sojourn for a while but ultimately the simple pleasures (or 'vanity fair') never satisfy, so we either need to journey on, or these things slowly kill the heart - if that sounds dramatic just look around and see what 'anaesthetics' people use in their lives and what it does to them. Instead fulfilment is from pursuing the God who pursues us, and that might well be across a desert of self-questioning and putting aside the simple pleasures, but it's what we were made for, and only by pursuing the true source of our hopes, desires and dreams will we find the fulfilment, the meaning that we earnestly seek. In doing so, we find that God is a wild lover of each of us, that He is passionate about each of us. This book is about a journey of the heart... into the heart of God.

If you haven't guessed by now, The Sacred Romance really touched me. I love its passion and honesty and it speaks deeply into my own experience. It is profound, transformational and affirms the deep desires and hopes within us - follow them, don't stamp on them, follow them through the wild roads and across the deserts - into the arms of God. Guys this book is as much for you as for the girls - it speaks into the adventure each of us seeks in our hearts, it affirms what's in each of our masculine souls, and encourages us onward in our journey. I heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars stirs my spirit with love for God   May 15, 2003

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is thirsty for more of God's love. I have read so many christian books that have affected my mind in some way, but this book really affected my spirit and reminded me of God's passionate desire for his people and for me as an individual. I have just finished reading it, and I am going to read it again... there are so many truths on every page. Life-changing.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring...   November 8, 2002

This book really gave me a different perspective on God and on who He really is. We always like to think of ourselves in relation to God as servants, friends, sheep (albeit that is all true). Yet we lose the reality that He wants to not only touch the deepest of our hearts but also desires to be The Ultimate Love of Our Life . And for that He suffered rejection & scorn and at the end painfully hung for hours on a cross. I was amazed at how well my journey in life was described. I enjoyed it very much. I am reading it a second time & will share it with my womens' bible study. I encourage anyone who wonders about that "emptiness" we all crave to fill to read this book & discover the Wildest Lover of All Times...

5 out of 5 stars Spoke to my heart about how God sees me...refreshing!   August 16, 1999

This book, from start to finish, took me on a journey into the nature of the heart of God where I saw, in some ways for the first time, just how God sees me and His passionate love for me. In the past I have focused so much on human love yet as I turned each page in this book I began to see how our Creator designed love from the beginning. He is our pursuer and His love is, indeed, wild because He did the impossible to bring us to Himself. Quite a moving book and very eloquently written. I recommend it to anyone who's ever longed for the kind of love that will never go away from someone who's pursued us from farther away than space and longer ago than time.
