1 out of 5 stars Utter rubbish but good customer service   October 18, 2008

Oh dear. I was hopeful about this software - McAfee have a big name in the industry. But it seems to have failed.
I installed the product - it took 3 attempts and eventually it worked, and on the desktop was a big shiny M. It all worked absolutely fine, except that you could not open the Backup & Restore section, nor the Firewall Lockdown section. But, not to worry, because everything else worked.
Then I switched it on the next day, and the first thing we noticed - it took 3 attempts to open it. Then there was a big red X saying that my computer wasn't protected. The virus scan, spyware checker et al had all failed.
So, I installed ,cAfee Virtual Technician, which failed to help, and after an half hour conversation over IM with a technican, I was running through the computer's hidden files, using CommandPrompt like a pro and eventaully had to open the PC in safe mode, and type in a long code, then my Windows XP spent the next 4 hours scanning each and every file in DOS to see if there was a virus. It found one, and deleted it.
Excellent, I thought. It must be working!
So, I switched the PC back on, and Security Centre wouldn't even open.
Back onto McAfee IM and the technicans took me through more complex instructions, and eventaully told me to uninstall it, and then reinstall the most recent version from their site.
So, by now (5-ish hours later) I wasn't very happy at all. Nevertheless, I went onto McAfee.com and lo and behold, it wouldn't install or download. Absolutely fed up. I'll be posting it back tonight.
The single star is for the friendly people at McAfee who tried in vain to help me.
