3 out of 5 stars Impressive software. Good mike. Painful headset.   November 13, 2008

Within minutes of completing the acoustic optimisation procedure after installation you will be surprised at how quickly and naturally you can speak and how accurate the voice recognition is. For me, it was about 98% accurate and much faster than typing.
Unfortunately, this was spoiled by a headset that pinches, even after being adjusted for size, and leaves you with a headache within fifteen minutes. This seemed more like a poorly designed product than a manufacturing error. The manual also states that the headset can be worn either way round. However, the earpiece is obviously designed to be worn over the left ear and is much less comfortable over the right. This is inconvenient if your computer is on your right. I don't know whether all the Standard editions are issued with the same headsets. However, I'm returning this one to Amazon and purchasing the Preferred Wireless edition instead.

5 out of 5 stars far better than expected   November 12, 2008

I bought this product because I do a lot of Open University study at home. I opted for the cheap standard version because I was not expecting it to be particularly accurate. However I have been amazed by how few mistakes it makes. Even when it does make a mistake it is very easy to correct without using the keyboard at all, and the system genuinely seems to learn from its mistakes. When you correct it and then repeat the same word again it almost always get it right the second time and any future times. For 66, with a perfectly good headset microphone thrown in, this is a bargain, and if you do a lot of wordprocessing then it may just change your life!

I had no problems installing or registering the product on a laptop which cost 750 around nine months ago (ie: decent spec but nothing outrageous). My only caveat would be that I have a fairly neutral news reader type voice which I'm sure makes a difference. If you have a strong regional accent you may not have such a positive experience although you may well still be fine.

By the way, this review has been dictated into Dragon and I have only had to make two corrections.

5 out of 5 stars I am amazed, it's absolutely brilliant!!   September 27, 2008

This product came through today, and here I am typing this review out with, I can't believe it I've suffered with dyslexia all my life and this feels like I have just been released into a whole new world, if like me you've always been afraid to type a review, then fear no more.

Get it, try it and don't worry about the bad reviews, you want be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing: no product code available   September 16, 2008

Well, for the educational version you need a product code. There is the problem. The address given to get this gives a "page not available" error so you try to go via the support section on main nuance web site. It is unlikely to open but if it does you fill in all their repetitive forms and send an email to get product code. Then ... nothing. You are left having spent a lot of money and still having to two finger type everything. Think hard before buying this product - I will let you know if they do send me a product code if I canDragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 10.0, Education Version

4 out of 5 stars Heads up re microphone   September 10, 2008

My experience is of 9.0, so I didn't want to include a star rating. But it IS worth telling people that if they're planning to use DNS on a laptop they're likely to run into problems that make it unusable unless they also buy a USB digital headset mike. Using the analogue mike that comes in the box means the signal can get hopelessly corrupted by onboard system noise by the time DNS gets to work with it, reducing recognition to virtually nil.

Frankly, Dragon would do themselves a favour by flagging this up and marketing a separate laptop edition with a bundled USB headset. As it was I went through no end of trouble figuring this out and fixing it for myself. By the way, I use a Plantronics DSP 400, which is a bit poorly designed, but solved all the problems and turned DNS 9 into the imperfect but very useful bit of kit I'd hoped it would be when I bought it.
