Amazon.co.uk Review Little did Tom Cruise know that he would become a box-office superstar after he cranked up some Bob Seeger and played air guitar in his underwear. But there's more to this 1983 hit than the arrival of a hot young star. Making a stylish debut, writer-director Paul Brickman crafted a subtle satire of crass materialism wrapped in an irresistible plot about a crafty high schooler named Joel (Cruise) who goes into risky business with the beguiling prostitute Lana (Rebecca De Mornay) while his parents are out of town. Joel turns his affluent Chicago-suburb home into a lucrative bordello and forms a steamy personal and professional partnership with Lana, but only as long as the two can avoid the vengeful pimp Guido (Joe Pantoliano) and keep their customers happy. A signature film of the 1980s, Risky Business still holds up thanks to Cruise's effortless charm and the movie's timeless appeal as an adolescent male fantasy. --Jeff Shannon

A Risky coming-of-age? October 24, 2008 The film that turned Cruise into a star, and led on to much else. The opening scene tell you what to expect - a bunch of affluent teens, playing poker, cigars at the pose. Then we get Cruise's parents - afluent, very materialistic, and about to go out of town. As soon as his friends get wind of this, they're bringing their girlfriends round for some 'privacy'. Cruise ends up with a local hooker - deMorney, and on the way past, mangles his dad's car, has a run-in with deMorney's pimp and let's not forget his mum's very precious egg. Of course, it ends up with the parents coming back to an immaculate house, that Cruise has basically had to buy back from the pimp, and of course that sex scene on the train....
Wrapped up very nicely with the Tangerine Dream soundtrack - Bob Seger used to very good effect too.
very enaging comedy November 10, 2006 The star of the mission impossible series is here in this very engaging `sexual' driven comedy. Cruise is fantastic as the stereotypical teenager who one night whilst his parents are away decides to call a hooker, brilliantly played by De Mornay (the and that rocks the cradle) and the two instantly form a relationship.
There is more to this story than meets the ye with controversy perhaps surrounding the idea that it is simple for a teenager to easily have sex with a prostitute. It is always engaging because audiences are thrust deep within the mind of Cruise's narration so we are always in the know as to what the young star is thinking and what is going to happen to him.
The plot is very well constructed and encodes very interesting characters.
Watch it if...you enjoy dark jokes about sex, teenage life and society.

A risk that pays off January 30, 2004 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
When I first heard what this film was about I thought it was a joke, then I thought it sounded terrible and then I saw the film and realised it was brilliant. There is no doubt in my mind that if Tom Cruise was not the main actor of this film it would have been a major failure. He plays the role of an awkward boy so perfectly that it makes the whole film come to life. This film has comedy, romance (although a little twisted) and a little bit of action that mix together to make a wonderful experience.Basically, 'Risky Business' is about a teenager who, after his parents leave him alone and go on holiday, forms a tentative partnership with a call girl providing a 'service' for all of his friends. Things take a nasty turn when the pimp Guido comes to get his revenge on Cruise for stealing all of his business. Most of the roles are played to perfection and some of the lines are absolutely hilarious. The film builds to a tantalizing finish which is both funny and tense. The only things that stopped me giving this film 5 stars were the parts of Cruise's parents which I found to be completely unbelievable. However, I would still recommend this film on DVD if it sounds like a something you would enjoy.
My best film of All Time December 14, 2002 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I remember seeing this film on TV many years ago when I was but a lad :). The film from then until now has capitivated me and was the start of my love afair (in my dreams) with Rebbecca Demornay. An excellant film - a must see.
Cruise off to a good start December 7, 2000 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Three years before the massive blockbuster that was Top Gun, a young Tom Cruise starred in a little known movie called Risky Business. He puts in an excellent and believable performance as Joel Goodson, a young do-gooder who is left to look after the house when his parents go on holiday. One scene in this movie has been copied countless times, most notably The Simpsons, see if you can spot it. The film is ok to watch the first time but after that it will gather on dust on your shelves, unless you are a big Tom Cruise fan and in that case I would insist that you buy it.
