seven notes hit the sky high in heaven December 16, 2008
seven wonders of cinema hit the seven notes of music and create a perfect rainbow splashed in the haze of popular art and culture as determined by the western culture in a european perspective .
this is truly a wonder of true cinema as robert wise has adapted a subtle but magnifique symphony from a stage musical with the whimsical but wonderfully talented julie andrews,christopher plummer and eleanor parker giving all they can,along with the extremely talented 7 trapp kids to a simply sophisticated but psychologically complex visual script which casually throws in some great witticisms and choreography to die for as well as music which reflects the seven hues of the rainbow with notes that fly to heaven and can make the angels sing in ecstasy .
the vision of wise symbolises life itself in all its vicarious shades as do the seven musical notes ,the seven children are just as charismatic as the 3 leads and wise makes the wisest musical of all times with a tongue in cheek camp tone underlying his traditional narrative as nuns sing and dance in the cloisters of a bavarian convent .
this is incomparable morally or artistically with anything of todays era and its wisdom shines in its literary stoic characters and prosaic dialogues only a sage can create with the lyrical cinematography on the alpine slopes where light intersperses with the pine and fir trees and thunder mixes with the cliffs to make the magical music of life come alive,
the menace of nazis and the virtue of the nuns is as symbolic of evil as the trapp family of our existence .
this is a true masterpiece which is the best that a decreipt yet delightful western culture can offer as both a pluralistic philosophy and intelligent entertainment .

The Sound Of Music (2 Disc 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition) [1965]
With nearly three hours of snow-capped Swiss mountains, a sprawling family of six children, extravagant parties, picnics and family concerts in Salzburg and buckets of encouragement from Rogers and Hammerstein, it's no wonder that this film is also called THE SOUND OF MONEY. It won FIVE ACADEMY AWARDS and has taken hundreds of millions dollars. It's the surprisingly simple story of Maria(JULIE ANDREWS), a nun who's Governess to the rigidly disciplined children of an Austrian Military Captain(CHRISTOPHER PLUMMER). She so enchants him that he breaks off his engagement to a socialite baroness. In the meantime, Maria, teaches the children to sing and the whole family is soon giving a concert in Salzburg, after which they flee the country to escape the Nazis.

Having given one star for "Gone With the Wind" and three starts for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" friends were acusing me of not liking "girl flicks". Whatever that means.
Well I enjoyed "The Sound of Music" enormously. So there. I admit I hadn't seen it for years and it has sat for some time on the shelf before I watched it but I have to say I thought it had stood the test of time really well.Julie Andrews' voice was so effortless and perfect and the sheer magnificence of Salzburg was such a great background to the story. (Unfortunately, my holiday tape of Salzburg was taped over by my daughter when she was two - I ended up with the Smurfs - perhaps an excuse to go back).
And the special features, especially the real life story of the Familie von Trapp, were of real interest. A great film and a great edition.

This shouldn't need a review. To have missed The Sound of Music you would have to be dead, living in a cave or mad.
Those old classics belting out bring back so many memories. I was dressed in curtain material as a child and although i lived in Essex, i yearn for Alpine valleys.
10 out of 10 for this one.

Maria and the Von Trapp children still sound good after all these years. There can hardly be a person on the planet who either owns a television or lives within 20 miles of a cinema and who doesn't know the story of The Sound of Music. Although I haven't been a fan of musicals until quite recently, I did watch and enjoy this film when I was a child, several decades ago. It's great fun and I can quite understand its popularity. Watching it again was lovely and very nostalgic. The restoration people have made a fine job so that the picture and sound quality are excellent. The special features are a considerable bonus and there's a long list of them as you can see from Amazon's 'Product Details' section above. The item on disc 2 that I found especially interesting was the 'Biography' programme about the real Von Trapp family. The real Maria was an astonishing character and far more complicated than the film version. It seems that she had an absolutely hellish childhood and the horror of it furnished her with a couple of darker facets to her personality than might be guessed from a familiarity with the film version of Maria - which all just adds to the fascination of the Von Trapp story.
If you haven't seen the film or haven't watched it for some years, give yourself a treat: watch it and get soppy, sentimental and uplifted ... and have a bit of a sing too.
